In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to connect your Pocket PC to a Bluetooth phone for the purposes of using the phone as a wireless modem for Internet connectivity.

Step 1: Check Your Setup

In order to connect your Pocket PC to the Internet using your mobile phone, you’ll need to be sure that you have the correct setup. Of course, your Pocket PC must be Bluetooth-enabled. Every Pocket PC released in 2005 or later has onboard Bluetooth, but most models for the preceding two years or so also have Bluetooth.

Next, you’ll need a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone that supports Dial-Up Networking, or DUN, over Bluetooth. While there are many phones with this ability, you may need to check with your wireless carrier for details on compatible handsets and data connectivity plans. Many wireless providers also charge extra for data connectivity.

If your Pocket PC and mobile phone each have onboard Bluetooth, and your mobile phone supports DUN over Bluetooth, you’re good to go.

Step 2: Establish a Connection

Before you begin, be sure that your mobile phone’s Bluetooth is turned on and that the phone is in Discoverable mode. When the phone’s Bluetooth is both active and discoverable, it’s time to begin setting up your Pocket PC’s Bluetooth software.

After powering on your Pocket PC’s Bluetooth, open the Bluetooth Settings menu. This can be done by tapping Start > Settings > Connections (Tab) > Bluetooth. In the Devices submenu, tap New Partnership. Allow the Pocket PC to scan for nearby Bluetooth devices.

When the Pocket PC detects your mobile phone, tap the phone’s ID, then tap next:

you will then be prompted to enter a passkey. Make the passkey whatever you’d like and tap next. The passkey must then be entered in your mobile phone to complete the pairing process.

The next screen on your Pocket PC will display a list of services offered by the paired Bluetooth device, in this case your mobile phone. As you can see, our Samsung A900 offers Dial-Up Networking over Bluetooth:

Check the box next to the Dialup Networking service and tap Finish. A new partnership between your Pocket PC and mobile phone has now been created.

Step 3: Show the Pocket PC How to Use the Mobile Phone

Now that you’ve set up a partnership between your Pocket PC and mobile phone, you must instruct your Pocket PC on how the partnership is to be used. From the Today Screen tap Start > Settings > Connections (Tab) > Connections. From this menu, you can create a new connection profile.

Tap Add a new modem connection. Name your connection and specify Bluetooth as the connectivity pathway:

The software will then ask you which Bluetooth device you would like to connect with for the new modem connection. Your recently-added mobile phone should be on the list. Highlight the phone and tap Next:

Next, you must provide the software with an ISP dial-up number, or in the case of most wireless phones, a dialing string. A dialing string is a which instructs your mobile phone to connect to your wireless provider’s data network rather than dialing an actual ISP number. Sprint Wireless, our provider, uses the code #777, but your provider may have a different dialing string. Enter the number or dialing string and tap Next.

The final step will be to enter your user name and password:

A username and password may not be required for all service providers, but if required, you’ll need to enter both values for validation purposes. In most cases, the Domain field will remain blank.

Click Finish. A new connection profile has now been created and can be used to connect to the Internet for e-mail, web browsing, etc. When attempting to access a web page in Internet Explorer Mobile, for example, the connection to your wireless data service should automatically open.

Final Thoughts

The procedure shown above will provide you with a ready connection between your Pocket PC and data-capable mobile phone. However, what we can’t provide are the specific settings which may be required in order to get your mobile phone talking to its mobile network correctly.

Each wireless provider has different setting and username requirements, and various other connection requirements, which may be system-wide or even change between individual users. If you’ve followed the instructions above and are having difficulty, you may need to input settings in the Advanced menu in the final screen where the Username, Password and Domain fields are shown (at the end of Step 3). Certain modem initialization strings may also be required. Check with your wireless provider for Dial-Up Networking settings specifics.

Even if your Pocket PC and Bluetooth phone are correctly paired in the Bluetooth software, failing to enter the right settings required by your wireless provider will almost certainly result in a failed connection.

This post describes how to use your Bluetooth- and Airport-enabled Mac with your Bluetooth-enabled Sprint PCS phone to set up a mobile wifi access point. Meaning, you can put your iBook in your car or backpack, put your phone in your pocket, and give free wifi internet access to anyone who happens to be in the area. (Of course, you will also be able to access the internet yourself all the while.)

These instructions assume you are using Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), and a Samsung A920, the official phone of Sprint Ambassadors everywhere. But they should apply to any Sprint phone with Bluetooth that is capable of being a data modem and/or using their Power Vision service. Non-ambassadors will have to navigate the labyrinth of Sprint customer service and get “phone-as-modem” service added to their plan. Once you’ve gotten that taken care of, please continue…

Summary for experienced people

Details are below, but if you know what you’re doing and just want to do it quickly:

1. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone.

2. Pair your phone with your Mac.

3. In the PPP configuration for Bluetooth in Network preferences, leave the username and password blank and use this phone number: #777

4. In Sharing preferences, go to the Internet pane and turn on Internet Connection Sharing for Bluetooth, allowing AirPort devices to connect.

5. Back in PPP, click “Dial Now…”. You should be all set. By default, your SSID will be your computer’s name.

6. If you need a detailed step-by-step, continue reading…

First, set up the phone

1. Press “Menu/OK”.

2. Select “Settings”.

3. Scroll down and select “Bluetooth” and press OK.

4. If Bluetooth is disabled, click OK on to enable it.

5. Set “Visibility” to “Always visible”. (This is optional and not very secure, but it might make things easier later.)

6. Select “Device Name” and enter a nice name for your phone. This is the name other Bluetooth devices (like your Mac) will display when connecting to your phone. (I have found in other contexts that choosing a one-word name can reduce errors.)

Connect your Mac to your phone via Bluetooth

1. Open System Preferences.

2. In the Hardware section, click Bluetooth.

3. In the Settings pane, make sure it says Bluetooth is on. Other than that, it doesn’t matter much what is selected.

4. In the Devices pane [screenshot], click “Setup New Device”.

5. The Bluetooth Setup Assistant wizard will start. Click “Continue” and select “Mobile phone” from the list of device types.

6. The wizard will scan the airwaves looking for Bluetooth devices. When you see the name of your phone, select it and click “Continue”.

7. After a few seconds of “gathering information,” the wizard will prompt you to click “Continue” to continue. Do so.

8. Your computer will display a “passkey”, a number you have to type into your phone to “pair” the phone with your Mac. [screenshot]

9. Your phone will prompt you to accept the pair. Press “Accept”.

10. Enter the passkey into your phone and press OK. If you wait too long, the connection will time out, and you’ll probably have to go back in the wizard and get a new passkey.

11. Once the pairing has taken place, click “Continue” to continue.

12. Make sure “Access the internet with your phone’s data connection” is checked.

13. Click “Continue”.

14. Here’s the important part: You will be prompted to enter connection settings. Leave “Username” and “Password” blank. In “Phone Number”, enter #777. For “Modem Script”, select “Sprint PCS Vision”. [screenshot]

15. Optionally, select the checkboxes to show Bluetooth and Modem status in the menu bar.

16. Click “Continue”.

17. Click “Quit”.

Connect to the Internet

At this point, you might want to turn off Airport and/or unplug your network cable, so that when you connect to the internet via the phone, you’ll be sure you are connected via the phone. (After it’s all set up, you can turn Airport back on.) In the meantime, here’s how to get connected:

1. Open System Preferences. (Or click “Show All” if your Bluetooth panel is still active.)

2. In the Network & Internet section, choose “Network”.

3. In the dropdown labeled “Show”, select “Bluetooth”.

4. In the “PPP” pane, make sure “Account Name” and “Password” are blank, and that “Telephone Number” is #777.

5. In the “Bluetooth Modem” pane, make sure the Modem dropdown says “Sprint PCS Vision”, and (optionally) check all checkboxes. Now you’re ready to connect to the internet.

6. Go back to the “PPP” pane, and click “Dial Now…” An “Internet Connect” dialog box will appear. Make sure the Bluetooth pane is showing. [screenshot]

7. Click “Connect”. The modem status in the menu bar will read “Connecting…” and your phone will say “Connected as data modem to [your computer name]“. You are connected! A timer on the phone will show the duration of your connection.

8. Open a web browser on your computer to confirm that you are connected.

Share your internet connection via AirPort

Now you are ready to share your connection to the internet with other users. To do so:

1. Turn AirPort back on if you turned it off earlier.

2. Return to System Preferences. (Click “Show All” if you are still on your Network settings.)

3. In “Internet & Network”, click “Sharing”.

4. Go to “Internet” pane. [screenshot]

5. In the dropdown labeled “Share your connection from”, select “Bluetooth”.

6. In the “To computers using” area, select “AirPort”.

7. Click “AirPort options” to make sure encryption is not turned on and/or to change the name of the access point (SSID) that your Mac will broadcast .

8. Click “Start” to start sharing your internet connection via wifi.

9. You may get a message saying this conflicts with your firewall setting, as Personal Web Sharing must be turned on (for some reason) to share your internet connection. If there’s a dialog, click “Show Services” or directly open the “Services” pane in Sharing (which partially controls your firewall), and activate “Personal Web Sharing” service. Note that this will make the “Sites” folder in your home directory available via your network connection. (If someone can explain to me why Personal Web Sharing has to be turned on in order to share your internet connection, I’d love to hear it. If it’s just to open the port, couldn’t they do that without firing up your web server?)

10. That’s it! You’re connected and you’re sharing your connection. You might want to test it with another wifi device to make sure it can connect. (By default, your Mac will broadcast its name as the the name of the access point (SSID)).

I am using a Samsung SCH-U740 phone and will be connecting to my mac running OSX 10.5: Leopard using Bluetooth. Connection via serial/usb cable should be similar, just skip the bluetooth pairing step. I have also used this hack on Tiger, and the steps should be easy to translate if you are familiar with Tiger’s Network preferences. Here we go.

1. Pair your phone with your Mac via Bluetooth Setup Assistant. When it asks you which services you would like to use with your phone, you don’t have to check any of them.

2. Set your phone to use 1x data only, not EVDO. On my phone I do this by highlighting “tools” in my menu and pressing “#”. Then, I enter “000000″ as the password, select “Pref Mode”, and change it to “CDMA Only.”

3. Open Terminal and type “cd ../../etc/ppp”. Press enter. now type “sudo pico”. Press enter, type your password, and press enter again. Now, type “refuse-chap”, press return, type “refuse-mschap”, press return, then type “refuse-mschap-v2″. Press Control+X. Press Y to save. Type “options” and press enter. Close Terminal.

4. Go to Network in System Preferences and click the “+” to add a new Network Connection. Set Interface to Bluetooth and type a descriptive name in the other field.

5. Use the Default configuration with the following credentials. Telephone Number: “#777″, Account Name: “#########@vzw3g.com” replace the pound with your phone number, password:”vzw”

6. Click Advanced. Change Vendor to Other and Model to Verizon Support (PC 5220). Also, change the Dial Mode to Ignore dial tone when dialing. Click OK. Now Apply your new network configuration by clicking Apply.

7. Click connect. You are good to go, like a Crunch Wrap Supreme. To make it easier for next time, just check “Show modem status in menu bar” and you can connect anytime from the menu bar.

Now you can take a little back from what Verizon steals from you every month. I have been using this “underground” service for quite some time and I will testify that it is free and I have never been charged one cent but I will also admit that sometimes it will work a little sparatically. But hey, internet anywhere? It’s like free nationwide wi-fi.

IMPORTANT UPDATE/EDIT: If you are receiving the error: “Internet Connect Could not open the communication device” immediately after trying to connect, then do this for step 5.

1. Click “Set Up Bluetooth Device.”

2. Highlight your phone and click the little gear in the bottom left and click “Configure this device…”

3. When Bluetooth Setup Assistant is done loading, this time check the box that says “Access the Internet with your phone’s data connection” and press continue.

4. Enter the information listed in steps 5 and 6 and click Continue.

5. Now try and connect.

The following procedure should enable you to make data connections over Sprint PCS with a Samsung SCH-8500 phone using a Windows 95/98/ME computer (e.g., IBM ThinkPad 600 notebook). The descriptions below assume Windows 98 Second Edition, but the process is similar for Windows 95/ME. (You may also be able to adapt these procedures for other Sprint PCS phones and/or other operating systems.)

If available, you might want to sign up for the initial free months promotion of Sprint PCS Wireless Web to avoid paying US$0.39/minute for data calls (as of this writing). To further keep costs down you should be able to buy a bare data cable direct from Samsung (888-987-4357) for US$50, rather than pay Sprint US$100 for the Sprint PCS Wireless Web Connection, which is just the cable and some user-friendly software that you don’t really need. The Samsung data cable connects easily to a standard notebook computer DB-9 serial port and the SCH-8500 phone.

Start by using the following procedure to create a modem entry for the Samsung SCH-8500:

1) Start » Settings » Control Panel » Modems.

2) Add » select “Other” (type of modem) » Next.

3) Check “Don’t detect my modem, I will select it from a list.”

4. Next.

5. Under Manufacturers, select “(Standard Modem Types).”

6. Under Models, select “Standard 19200 bps Modem.”
(The COM port must be set at 19200 bps or the SCH-8500 will not work.)

7. Next.

8. Select your COM port (COM1 in the case of this computer).

9. Next » Finish.

That installs the modem, and should take you back to Modem Properties, which should be closed with OK, followed by closing the Control Panel.

QNC (Quick Net Connect)

Acknowledgement: Thanks to Bob George for figuring out how to access Sprint PCS QNC!

There are three ways to make a data connection:

QNC (Quick Net Connect): direct connection to the Internet thru Sprint PCS (described here)

Using a dial-up Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Other dial-up service
