What is iPhoneModem

iPhoneModem enables sharing of the iPhone’s Internet connection with your Mac or PC.

It’s a simple and small footprint application for the iPhone and the Desktop Computer that anyone can use on a few seconds.

iPhoneModem is available for Jailbreaked devices using the cydia package manager on the phone.

To make connecting a one click task, you should also download the helper application for your computer.

How does it work

iPhoneModem has two sides: the Modem application on the iPhone and the iPhoneModem helper for the Mac or the PC.

On the computer, the helper application creates a new computer-to-computer (or ad-hoc) WiFi network and configures the system preferences to use the iPhone as an Internet gateway and proxy.

On the iPhone, the application opens a routing engine, DHCP, DNS, HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS proxies and connects to the helper on the computer.

How to Install

1. Jailbreak the iPhone (if you haven’t already)

2. On the iPhone use “Cydia” to install iPhoneModem – it’s filed on the Networking category. After installing a new App named “Modem” should be available on the iPhone.

3. Download and install the helper application.

How to Use it

After installing iPhoneModem on the phone and on the computer, open the iPhoneModem on the computer and click “connect”.

A new WiFi network is created by the computer and, on the iPhone you should select it and open the “Modem” application. When connected everything should be automatically configured

How to set up a WAP gateway

To access WAP sites through Pocket Internet Explorer, configure your device to use a WAP gateway. Use the following steps to create a new set of connections to the Internet with WAP gateway settings. Viewing WAP sites is not supported on all devices.

1. Get the following information from your ISP: ISP server phone number, user name, and password. Also, contact your mobile phone service provider and ask for your WAP gateway server name and port number.  

2. Tap Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections > Tasks tab. 

3. Tap Edit my proxy server. If a proxy server has not been set up, tap Set up my proxy server.

4. On the Proxy Settings tab, select This network connects to the Internet and This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet.

5. If necessary, in the Proxy server box, enter the proxy server name.

6. Tap Advanced.

7. In the WAP box, enter the WAP gateway server name. UndePort, enter the port number. The most common WAP port number is 9201.  

8. Create a modem connection. Also, if necessary, set dialing rules.

Double click on the Mobile connect CD icon on your desktop like you see in the image below.

Once a new window opens, double click on the Mobile Connect icon.

An installation window will open, advising you to close all other applications you may have open. Once done click Continue.

A Software License Agreement page will appear. After you read and agree with the terms, click Continue.

A pop-up message will appear asking whether you agree to the terms of the license. Click Agree

You will now be asked to choose where you would like the driver to be installed. Keep it to the default location and click Continue

A window will appear to tell you where the driver will be installed on your Mac. Keep it to the default location and click Install.

You may be asked for your computer password or the master password for your Mac. Enter it and click OK.

A window will appear to let you know the installation has been installed successfully. Click Close

You can now plug your modem into your Mac. It may take a little while for your computer to recognize the modem, but this should take no longer than 20 to 30 seconds.
Double click on the Macintosh HD icon on your computer desktop and go to Applications.
Scroll down until you find Mobile Connect and open it.

When the application opens, click on Settings.

If you see that the settings are all fine, click on Ok else click on Edit or New.

Under Profile Name enter a name for this connection. It does not matter what name you enter here.
Where it says Access Point Name, enter the APN of your internet service provider. If not sure contact your internet service provider.
Where it shows Telephone number enter *99# (if you don’t have a # on your keyboard, just hold down the ALT key and 3 at the same time).
Now click Save and then click OK.

Now click on Connect to connect to the internet. Once you connected it will show a connection successful message.

Now open Safari and start browsing the internet

This article describes how to use a modem with your new Pocket PC so that you can do some practical and fun things such network synchronize with your desktop pc back at the office or chat with your friends on Microsoft’s MSN® Messenger while you’re sitting on the beach in Hawaii.

Setting up the Modem
Before you start setting up a modem on your Pocket PC, make sure that you have all the applicable information: a phone number to the ISP (Internet Service Provider) and compatible Pocket PC modem. If you need a static IP address, have that information as well as DNS (Domain Name Service) server addresses handy.

Now you’re ready to begin. Tap the START menu, then select SETTINGS and tap on the Connections Manager icon. The first screen displayed will look familiar if you have already read the article Using the Connection Manager (Article 10, Figure 2, left screenshot or Figure 1, left screenshot below).

1. Make sure that “Internet Settings” is selected in the first connection option.
2. Tap the “Modify…” button (Figure 1, left screenshot).
3. Tap “New…” on the next screen (Figure 1, right screenshot).

4. Insert the Modem into the CF (Compact Flash) slot on the Pocket PC.
5. Enter a name for the connection such as “Earthlink Dialup” or “Targus 56k Modem”
6. Select the modem in the pop-up list (Figure 2, left screenshot) and baud rate.
7. Tap “Next” (Figure 2, left screenshot). Advanced options are described later.
8. Enter all applicable phone number information. This includes country code, area code, and phone number to your ISP (Figure 2, right screenshot). Then tap “Next”.

9. Select any options in Figure 3, left screenshot (below) that you would like to use. Many people will find that these default options are adequate. If you need to enter any extra modem commands this is the screen to do it.
10. Tap “Finish”.

Advanced Connection Options
While creating a new connection for your Pocket PC’s modem, there was a button labeled “Advanced…” on the second screen (Figure 2, left screenshot). The “Advanced” options provide manual control over the following settings: port, TCP/IP and DNS.

A missing feature of Connections Manager is that it does not allow you to create a connection script. This means that if the service you are dialing into does not support Microsoft Authentication (entering your username/password before dialing) you may need to manually enter your username and password with a terminal window. This is done after connecting to the ISP and enabled by checking the “use terminal after connecting” option (Figure 4, left screenshot).

TCP/IP, DNS/WINS Options
Most ISPs will automatically assign your Pocket PC an IP number and provide Name Server information when connected. Pocket PC 2002 users don’t have to change any of these settings unless you want to specify a static IP address, DNS server or WINS server. If this sounds foreign to you than it’s best to just skip over this option.

Pocket PC 2000 users
If you’re using an older Pocket PC device running the Pocket PC 2000 operating system and plan to network synchronize, then there’s a small gotcha involved. In order to locate the desktop pc, you have to specify your desktop pc’s static IP number in the WINS option under “Advanced…” located in the “Name Servers” tab. Simply tap the “Use specific server address” circular button and then enter the DNS server addresses as well as your desktop pc’s static IP address as the WINS server. However, you will now have to also specify the DNS servers manually. Check with your system administrator if you do not know what they are.

It’s Time To Dial: Using Dialing Locations
When you first tap the Connections Manager icon in the SETTINGS screen two tabs will appear on the bottom of the screen. The left tab displays your connection settings (Figure 1, left screenshot), and the right tab will display the dialing options screen. These settings can be modified so that it is quick and easy to dial from “home” or “work” where the process might be slightly different.

For example, at home you might want to disable call waiting before dialing, and at work you need to dial a 9 for access to an outside line. The Dialing Locations settings allow you customize this information.

Making the Connection
Now that you have finished setting up a modem there are two ways to dial your ISP and make a connection to the Internet. The first is by running a program that is Connections Manager aware such as Pocket Internet Explorer or Microsoft MSN® Messenger which will automatically look for an Internet connection and start one if necessary. Otherwise you can tap the “Connect…” button in Figure 1, left screenshot.

The following procedure is grouped into three steps. First, setting up the laptop and the cellphone for Internet sharing, rather than connecting via an application like ActiveSync. Second, configuring both the laptop and the cellphone for the Internet connection, and finally, initializing the connection. Once you’ve completed steps 1 and 2, you’ll never have to do them again. The next time you want to access the Internet with your cellphone you simply “redial,” and you’re online. This particular setup is based on the HTC manufactured series of windows mobile devices. In my case I still use the now-ancient HTC Cingular 8125, however these steps work for the later models (and most Windows Mobile devices will also be similar).

Step 1: Getting Things Ready

The first thing that you need to do before you can establish a laptop/modem connection is to kill the current application that’s handling communications between your laptop and cellphone. In my case, I’m running ActiveSync, so I kill that process using the Task Manager.

For ActiveSync, you just find wcescomm.exe and kill the process. If you’re particular Windows Mobile device uses another application, you’ll need to find the process name and make sure that you kill it. Secondly, you’ll need to also shut down the communications software on your phone. In the case of ActiveSync, in Windows Mobile you go to Start -> Settings -> System -> Memory -> Running Programs, and then if ActiveSync is listed you’ll need to stop the process.

Once you’ve stopped the communications software on both the laptop and Windows Mobile phone, you’re ready to establish the connection between the laptop and phone as an Internet modem.

Step 2: Connecting The Cellphone As a Modem

The only real configuration required in Windows Mobile in order to set up your device as an Internet modem is to enable the “Modem Link.” The Modem Link configuration can be found by going to Start -> Programs.

Once you’re inside the Modem Link configuration, just change the Connection setting to USB. It’s likely that your other settings are already configured, however if they are not just make sure that the Access point name has the name of the connection you configured on your mobile device for Internet access. When everything looks good, click “Activate” at the bottom, and the “Status” at the top should change to “Active.”

If your device is already connected to your laptop, you’ll get the “Found New Hardware” wizard pop-up immediately. If you’re not yet plugged in, then now’s the time to do it.

Just make sure that you select to install from a specific location so that you’ll have the option to manually select your driver file. Click next.

On the next screen, you’ll click the browse button and go to the folder where the driver file is located. In my particular case with the Cingular 8125, and for most HTC mobile devices, you’ll need the USBMDM.INF driver file as well as the HTC USB Modem Dialer application. Both are offered as a free download from xda-developers.com. Download the zip file and put them wherever you’ll remember. Then in the Windows Wizard screen above, browse to the directory where you extracted the INF file. If your Windows Mobile device is non-HTC, check with the manufacturer for a USB modem driver for your device.

The Wizard will recognize the device. Depending on your particular device and the version of the driver, you may see the error message above. Just click “Continue Anyway.”

Finally, the driver’s installed and you’re ready to start using your new Mobile USB Modem anytime you want to, and anywhere you have a cellular signal!

Step 3: Initializing the Internet Connection

To establish your new mobile Internet connection using your laptop, run the executable that you downloaded from the link above. Regardless of your device or your cellular carrier, you’ll typically always need to enter a User Name and Password. You can access that information (if you don’t already know it from setting up Internet use on your mobile device) by contacting your cellular provider and asking for the User Name and Password to use with your Internet data plan.

Enter those details into the USB modem dialer, and after a few moments it’ll inform you that you’re now connected. Yes, that means that at this moment, even while you’re sitting in the middle of the lake with a fishing pole in one hand, your laptop is now connected to the Internet via your cellphone signal. It may not be lightning fast – but when you’re desperate to submit your latest article (or check on your team’s latest game results), sometimes such a connection is all you need.
