I am using a Samsung SCH-U740 phone and will be connecting to my mac running OSX 10.5: Leopard using Bluetooth. Connection via serial/usb cable should be similar, just skip the bluetooth pairing step. I have also used this hack on Tiger, and the steps should be easy to translate if you are familiar with Tiger’s Network preferences. Here we go.
1. Pair your phone with your Mac via Bluetooth Setup Assistant. When it asks you which services you would like to use with your phone, you don’t have to check any of them.
2. Set your phone to use 1x data only, not EVDO. On my phone I do this by highlighting “tools” in my menu and pressing “#”. Then, I enter “000000″ as the password, select “Pref Mode”, and change it to “CDMA Only.”
3. Open Terminal and type “cd ../../etc/ppp”. Press enter. now type “sudo pico”. Press enter, type your password, and press enter again. Now, type “refuse-chap”, press return, type “refuse-mschap”, press return, then type “refuse-mschap-v2″. Press Control+X. Press Y to save. Type “options” and press enter. Close Terminal.
4. Go to Network in System Preferences and click the “+” to add a new Network Connection. Set Interface to Bluetooth and type a descriptive name in the other field.
5. Use the Default configuration with the following credentials. Telephone Number: “#777″, Account Name: “#########@vzw3g.com” replace the pound with your phone number, password:”vzw”
6. Click Advanced. Change Vendor to Other and Model to Verizon Support (PC 5220). Also, change the Dial Mode to Ignore dial tone when dialing. Click OK. Now Apply your new network configuration by clicking Apply.
7. Click connect. You are good to go, like a Crunch Wrap Supreme. To make it easier for next time, just check “Show modem status in menu bar” and you can connect anytime from the menu bar.
Now you can take a little back from what Verizon steals from you every month. I have been using this “underground” service for quite some time and I will testify that it is free and I have never been charged one cent but I will also admit that sometimes it will work a little sparatically. But hey, internet anywhere? It’s like free nationwide wi-fi.
IMPORTANT UPDATE/EDIT: If you are receiving the error: “Internet Connect Could not open the communication device” immediately after trying to connect, then do this for step 5.
1. Click “Set Up Bluetooth Device.”
2. Highlight your phone and click the little gear in the bottom left and click “Configure this device…”
3. When Bluetooth Setup Assistant is done loading, this time check the box that says “Access the Internet with your phone’s data connection” and press continue.
4. Enter the information listed in steps 5 and 6 and click Continue.
5. Now try and connect.
Well put job:D will definitely come back again soon=)
