How to configure OnSync with a Bluetooth Mobile

Intro
——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

This little tutorial shows how it is possible to configure your Mac to use a Bluetooth phone with OnSync.

You can follow the steps described in this document for all mobile device models. The pictures presented in this tutorial are referred to a

Sony Ericsson T68i, but the configuration process for other models should be similar to the one described here.

Let me know if you have troubles with this configuration or if you follow different steps to configure your mobile, so i’ll try to update this tutorial.

Your Mobile Configuration:
——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

- light on your mobile

- verify that Bluetooth is activated on your mobile and that the mobile is reacheable

- your mobile needs to be near your mac (about 10 meters around)

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Your Mac Configuration:

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

- insert your bluetooth adapter into an USB port (if you need an adapter, some users have bluetooth already integrated in their mac)

-Bluetooth Preferences Pane – Settings tab configuration – Step 1

. open your bluetooth preference pane and configure it as shown (probably you dont need to configure it exactly as in the picture, the following is my working configuration, start with this one and if it works you can try different ones)

The content of this last window will be quite different depending on your mobile phone. Your Bluetooth mobile supports some “Device

Services”. Among those services it should be present one that lets you communicate to your mobile using serial communication. This

service will be used by OnSync to communicate to your mobile. The “Serial Device Service” has different names depending on the mobile

brand and model you are using. In the following table are showed some possible “Serial Service Names” you will see for different mobile

brands:

Brand                  Service Name (Serial)

——————– ———————————————

Motorola                          Dial-up networking Gateway

Nokia                                  COM1

Sony Ericsson             Serial Port1, Serial Port2

Siemens                           Serial Port

this table is not exhaustive, if you have different Serial Services

listed send me your configuration to onsync@onmadesoft.com so I’ll

modify this tutorial.

- Bluetooth Verify if a serial port is already configured, and configure it if absent – Step 4

- open (if not already opened) the Bluetooth preferences panel and go to the paired devices list

  1png

- select the Bluetooth device corresponding to the mobile you have paired

- if the se il button “Edit Serial Ports…” is disabled your Tiger System is not recognizing any serial service on your mobile. This is a

trouble for Motorola owners, in Panther they used to add a serial port using the “Dial-up Networking Gateway” service. This service is

not recognized by Tiger as a serial one. Actually this problem is not solved yet in OnSync, while waiting for a new release that solve this,

you can use the “Bluetooth Serial Utility” provided with Panther. This program is still working on Tiger and has more control over

device’s configuration on your Mac. You should use a backup of your previous Panther system and find this application in the

Application/Utilities folder. If you have this need you have to follow the installation step 4 of the bluetooth configuration manual provided

for Panther. You can download this manuale from

- if the button “Edit Serial Ports…” is enabled you can proceed from here

- then press the “Edit Serial Ports…” button

1png

- the newly opened window will show you if a serial device port is configured for the mobile phone you just paired

(in the previous picture a Serial Port is available and it is already configured)

- if a serial port is already configured take note of the “Port Name” of the serial port and skip this paragraph, you will need the “Port

Name” in the next configuration step.

- if a serial port is not present, you can try to add a new one (not all the bluetooth mobile phones have a serial device service)

 1png

1) press the + button

2) assign a serial port name (do not use words separated by spaces, use the ‘-’ character instead)

3) select the Device Service you want to use for serial communication

ATTENTION:

if the Device Service list is empty you want be able to configure your mobile phone to communicate

with OnSync, probably on your mobile there aren’t Serial Services available to communicate

with your Mac

(the next table contains some serial services available on different mobile models)

Brand                 Service Name (Serial)

——————– ———————————————

Motorola                     Dial-up networking Gateway

Nokia                           COM1

this table is not exhaustive, if you have different Serial Services listed send me your

configuration to onsync@onmadesoft.com so I’ll modify this tutorial.

4) select the port type can be RS-232

- your newly created configuration should be similar to the previous picture

- press the “Apply” button on the previous window and then close the Bluetooth Preferences

- now you should have a “Serial Port” available for accessing to your mobile via bluetooth, the name of this serial port is very important

to proceed with the OnSync configuration

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

OnSync Configuration:

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

- open OnSync and go to the Preferences -> Mobile Device

- configure the Mobile Type corresponding to the mobile device you are using (in the example Sony Ericsson T68i)

- configure the Serial Device you just created at the preceding step (in the example /dev/cu.T68irag-SerailPort1-1)

- configure a baud rate (usually 19200 works, usually higher (and faster) values works for Bluetooth devices too)

- press the “Test Connection” button to see if OnSync arrives to communicate with your mobile

- let me know it this works for you too (

 onsync@onmadesoft.com)

. the Bluetooth Setup Assistant will start and will help you in the mobile configuration

1png

. press continue

1png

. select “Mobile Phone” and press continue

1png

. select the mobile device you want to pair, (if no mobile is listed verify your mobile bluetooth configuration, it has to be activated on the mobile)

1png

. your mobile should be asking a passkey, go to the mobile and enter the passkey that you Mac is showing you

(sometimes the process could be the opposite, depending on the sequence of actions you follow it could be that you have to create a

code on the mobile and then enter it on your mac)

. once you’ll have entered the passkey on your mobile, you’ll get the following window, configure it for your needs, for OnSync none of

those check boxes are important, but they are very useful for integration of your mobile with the software provided by Apple ( iSync,

Address Book) and also for accessing to Internet using the mobile phone)

.

1png

-

Bluetooth Preferences Pane – Devices tab configuration – Step 2

. if you already tried to configure your mobile before reading this tutorial you can decide to start from scratch. In that case remove your

mobile from the Bluetooth Device list under the Devices tab of the Bluetooth Preferences Pane

press continue and then quit

. now your mac is paired with your mobile

. return to your Bluetooth preferences, this window should be similar to the following picture
